About

I am an artist in my spare time for leisure.

Much of my art is created with pencils and marker pens.  The benefits of marker pens are many including very vivid colours.  However, it is an incredibly challenging medium to use.  It is unforgiving.  With paint, you can go over a mistake, with pencils you can erase mistakes, with markers, any serious mistake will spell the end of the image, therefore you need to be well prepared for what you are going to put down on paper.  I will often have many sample sheets before committing to the image.

The next challenge with markers is they take around 30 seconds to dry completely, therefore if you plan to blend, you need to work fast.  That means you need to have the pens you wish to blend with (sometimes up to 4 colour variations), ready with lids off and you need to work fast once you have committed.  It  helps being able to draw with both hands, I can put a colour down on the paper and immediately start blending with the colour that’s in the other hand if I need to.

I have dyslexia.  I am not an artist with dyslexia, I am an artist because of dyslexia, it gifts me with an ability to visualise.  Dyslexia gives me the ability to move images around in my mind, I often visually flip images and even words seamlessly, I can mentally look at images from all angles.  In a nod to this, I often flip images, however, it will not always be obvious to the casual viewer.  I also now sign images backwards, to me they are seamless, neither backward or forwards.  Whilst dyslexia has its challenges in life, I would not live a day without it.  I always try and live my life CreativeLeigh.
